Refurbishment and retrofit of Tod College by TLCCH to improve usability and reduce the carbon impact. Todmorden Learning Centre and Community Hub (TLCCH) received significant funding in the Town Deal fund to refurbish and retrofit Tod College.

As part of the 6 week long Live Projects programme, Masters of Architecture students at the Sheffield School of Architecture (SSOA) provided consultation and designs for three key areas:
˗ Independent use of the hall whilst improving the streetside presence,
˗ Retrofit to reduce energy consumption,
˗ Provide options for further consultation for a new kitchen space.

Independent use of the hall whilst improving the streetside presence
The Live Project team sought ideas and feedback from the community, building users and stakeholders. Using the feedback, the team developed a new, vibrant entrance and reception on the main frontage of the building. The redesigned streetside entrance is prominent and welcoming, providing the community an inclusive, green space for the community to use for relaxing, planting and play in alignment with the college’s sustainable and inclusive ethos. Natural materials continue from the new facade into the foyer space, creating a welcoming and healthy environment for the building users. Four ambulant disabled and one fully accessible toilet have been provided in the proposed extension, to ensure equal access for all users.

Retrofit to reduce energy consumption
The brief stated that “The existing building is poorly insulated, resulting in sky high operational costs, draughts and damp.” In alignment with the college’s sustainable ethos, the aim is to retrofit the entire building using a fabric first strategy. The building will serve as an innovative test bed for new approaches and technologies. Demonstrating the use of natural materials in an educational approach by the Climate College’s insulation tests and the first use of Ecococon straw bale insulation.

Provide options for further consultation for a new kitchen space
The Live Project team provided three variations which are intended to be used in consultations with key stakeholders,
enabling discussion about the optimal layout and flexible use of the space for:
˗ Cookery classes,
˗ Partial or complete hire by professionals,
˗ Potential prep cooking by Incredible Todmorden.
