South Yorkshire Building Preservation Trust (SYBPT) has recently purchased a Georgian townhouse in Thorne, a small market town near Doncaster. Thorne has had serious economic problems and is now a priority area for many regeneration grants such as Market Town Initiatives and Coalfield Regeneration Grants.

The SYBPT has purchased 42-44 King Street with a view to helping in the overall regeneration of Thorne and to conserve an important example of its architectural heritage. The Trust also has an educational remit which it hopes it can fulfil with this project. This may involve promoting the history of the building, as well as providing an exemplar for good conservation practice.

An exhibition about the history of Thorne, 42-44 King Street in particular was erected at market day one day in October 2005. This was a success in terms of local people becoming interested in their town and even attracted the local newspaper. An extensive research document included extensive Thorne history, visuals suggesting future uses for 42-44 King Street, meeting minutes and interview transcripts was handed on to the South Yorkshire Building Preservation Trust.
